Business electricity suppliers

Ofgem counted 65 active suppliers in the business gas and electricity retail markets (Ofgem, State of the Market: Energy Retail, published 27 January 2026, on Q2 2025 data). This page lists who currently sells business electricity in Great Britain, grouped by type, dated, with the names that are gone.

Around 100 companies hold a GB electricity supply licence, and most never sell to an ordinary business (tally of Ofgem's licensee list by Energy Costs, 7 July 2026; workings on our pricing methodology). We do not rank them, because nobody can. Ofgem publishes market share and service scores for the household market only, so any "best supplier" table is opinion or a review score. Names checked in August 2026 against each supplier's own site.

Who supplies business electricity in the UK

Large established suppliers

  • British Gas Business. The business arm of Centrica, selling to sites of every size.
  • EDF. Homes and businesses, and took on Opus Energy's small business book in 2024.
  • E.ON Next Business. The E.ON group's small and medium business supply arm.
  • npower Business Solutions. Business only, aimed at large industrial and commercial sites.
  • ScottishPower. Business contracts sold direct and through brokers, alongside its household book.
  • SSE Energy Solutions. SSE's business supply arm.
  • Octopus Energy for Business. The Octopus business arm, which absorbed Shell Energy Retail in December 2023.
  • Utilita. Domestic-led, and supplies smaller business sites.

  • TotalEnergies Gas & Power. Business only. Formerly Total Gas & Power.
  • Drax Energy Solutions. Larger sites, having sold its small business book to EDF in 2024.
  • SmartestEnergy Business. Business only, small sites through to large.

Names you will still see listed that are gone

  • Opus Energy. Its small business book went from Drax to EDF, agreed 27 June 2024.
  • Shell Energy and Shell Business Energy. Octopus completed its purchase of Shell Energy Retail in December 2023.
  • Gazprom Energy. Renamed SEFE Energy in 2022, listed above under that name.
  • Rebel Energy. Ceased trading on 1 April 2025 with around 10,000 business customers (Ofgem).
  • Tomato Energy. Ceased trading in November 2025; British Gas took on its customers (Ofgem).

How to choose between them

Start with price for your actual meter, because the spread between suppliers is wider than anything else on this page. Then read the contract: length, what happens at the end of it, and what leaving early costs. Service is harder to judge, because no regulator-backed rating exists for business suppliers, and a supplier can fail, in which case Ofgem appoints a replacement and supply carries on. The biggest supplier is rarely the cheapest one

British Gas Business describes itself on its own site as "the UK's largest business energy supplier with over 350,000 small to medium sized businesses and large organisations" (British Gas business, About us, checked August 2026). That is the company's own claim. Ofgem publishes no market share table for the business market, so nobody can check it, and size tells you nothing about price.

On out-of-contract electricity, Conrad Energy charged 29.15p per kWh and Corona Energy charged 40.66p, both effective on the same day, 1 April 2026 (Purely Energy out-of-contract rates tracker, read August 2026). That is 11.5p per kWh between two suppliers on one product on one day. The gap is the loyalty tax for letting a contract lapse, and it turns on whose name is on your bill.
