660 litre bin hire and collection

A 660 litre bin is the mid-sized four-wheeled commercial bin. It runs 1.2 to 1.3m high, 1.26 to 1.37m wide and 0.72 to 0.78m front to back, depending on the maker. It holds 10 to 12 standard 65-litre sacks (Business Waste and Bins.co.uk, checked August 2026).

Size and capacity

Manufacturers publish about 1213 x 1373 x 776mm (Workplace Products and Plastor, checked August 2026). Councils measure it as sited, wheels included, at 1.30 x 1.26 x 0.72m (Croydon Council, checked August 2026). Measure your gate against the larger figure.

The container is rated to 310kg, an engineering figure for the plastic and castors (Plastor, checked August 2026). What a carrier will lift is lower, 35 to 40kg of general waste and 20 to 30kg of dry mixed recycling (Business Waste, Bins.co.uk and Waste Managed, checked August 2026). Every carrier sets its own allowance, which is why those figures disagree.

Who it suits

Depth is what has to clear an alleyway or a side gate. Croydon Council measures a 660 at 0.72m deep against 1.00m for an 1100 (checked August 2026). Those 28 centimetres decide whether the bin lives out of sight or on the pavement.

It suits cafés, shops, offices and pubs with side access. It rolls on four swivel castors (Plastor, checked August 2026). Where you have room and volume, an 1100 litre bin holds more per lift. The full range sits on commercial bins.

Collection frequency and cost

Carriers price per site and publish nothing. The only published 660 litre prices are council trade waste rates for 2026/27. Cherwell District Council charges £15.90 a lift. Amber Valley Borough Council charges £18.55 a collection for refuse and £10.06 for recycling, and publishes its refuse year as £964.66 weekly and £482.33 fortnightly. In Wales, Neath Port Talbot charges £1,221.50 a year weekly plus £137 bin rental, so rental can sit outside the price.

None of the three states whether VAT is included. Those are councils' own tariffs, not a Nettle quote and not a national average. Frequency follows how fast you fill it, and an overflowing bin costs more in side-waste charges.

One 660 for general waste will not meet the rules in England on its own. Workplaces with 10 or more employees have separated dry recyclables and food waste since 31 March 2025, and smaller firms follow by 31 March 2027 (GOV.UK, checked August 2026). Food waste counts even where there is no kitchen, so most sites need a second container.
